The dark side of D&G

For years now Dolce & Gabbana have been the pinnacle of Italian luxury fashion houses. From the maximalist at heart mentality which perfectly describes the general aesthetic around the idea which is Italian Luxury, to the roses and lace; they are one of the best globally selling Italian Luxury brands. The same way the patriotic brand proudly displays the timeless essence of Italy which the world has come to love, it has also sometimes portrayed somewhat dated backtrack minded ideals and questionable opinions. This can very likely affect the income as well as the longevity of any brand, especially one which the entire branding sits on the shoulders of the founding designers (Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana) and when either party stirs up some type of controversy it is immediately tied back to the brand.

Here are some examples:

On Family: "You are born and you have a mother and father. Or atleast it should be so, so I do not convince those I call the children of chemistry, synthetic children (...) seeds chosen from a catalog. And then go and explain to said children who the mother is. (...) Procreation must be an act of love, today even psychiatrists are ready to face the effects of these experiments" - Domenico Dolce (Panorama) 2015

Responding to backlash on their sneaker reading "Im thin and gorgeous." : "Darling you prefer to be fat and full of cholesterol? I think you have a problem." -Stefano Gabbana (Instagram) 2017

On being gay: "I dont want to be called gay, because im simply a man...full stop." -Stefano Gabbana (Courier della Sera) 2017

On sexual Harassment: "After 20 years you say *ah! He touched my ass!* Its not violence this; Who doesn't do sex? Its a trend and now the trend is sex." - Stefano Gabbana (Vogue,UK) 2017

On their Legacy: "Once we are dead; we are dead. I dont want a Japanese designer to start designing Dolce&Gabbana." -Stefano Gabbana (Corrier della Sera) 2018
