Behind the lens: Jack Davison

In the world of fashion photography Jack Davison is a fresh young face quickly proclaiming his place in the industry. At the age of 26 he already has his work published through the pages of several magazines including Vogue's October 2017 issue.

The raw yet stylised nature of his captures have been referred to as a modern take on some of the masters of photography such as Irving Penn, Ernst Haas and August Sander. More vivid although through his work are the notions of surrealism and references to literature, which comes as no surprise, as he went forward to study English literature at the University of Warwick setting photography aside and taking it on as a hobby. He speaks highly of Salvador Dali being obsessed with his work from a young age, he now looks closely on Man Ray, Lisette Model, Alfred Stieglitz. As many young upcoming photographers he uses his social media as a platform to promote and share his work with the world, with over 10,ooo followers on Instagram and Flickr he credits social media for motivating him to pursue this hobby. In an interview with the British Journal of Photography (BJOP) he comments on his style of work saying “I think it helps that I also never got ‘taught’ in an official sense. I was never told how to do things, and never given any set boundaries, so I’ve never had a problem with experimenting.”

One of his most profound bodies of work came as a result of an adventurous 6 month expedition exploring the US. His aim was to create a series which encapsulated his philosophy as a photographer, and indeed 26 states and 100.000 miles later he succeeded to do so, wandering through the streets conversing with strangers in search of raw, natural, spontaneous moments to which he added “I consider myself a documentary photographer but I am more interested in the beauty or strangeness of a moment than I am with finding facts, or trying to make an argument.” The critically acclaimed collection of mostly monochromatic pictures and a generous amount of portraits helped launch his career in London.
